We refer to these episodes as stagnation traps, because they consist in the joint occurrence of a liquidity and a growth trap. In a stagnation trap, the central bank is unable to restore full employment because weak growth depresses aggregate demand and pushes the interest rate against the zero lower bound, while growth is weak because low aggregate demand results in low profits, limiting firms’ investment in innovation. Policies aiming at restoring growth can successfully lead the economy out of a stagnation trap, thus rationalizing the notion of job creating growth.Item Open Access News, Uncertainty and Economic Fluctuations(Astana University, 2017-05-12) Forni, Mario; Gambetti, Luca; Sala, LucaItem Open Access Lecture by Ms. Christine Lagarde at Nazarbayev University(Nazarbayev University, 2017-05-26) Christine, LagardeLecture by Ms. Christine Lagarde, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund on the current and prospective global and regional environment, as well as the challenges and opportunities for Kazakhstan and the Caucasus and Central Asia region.Item Open Access "The World in 2035: hyperconflict or global renaissance?"(Nazarbayev University, 2017-06-28) Attali, JacquesLecture by Professor Jacques Attali, President of Positive Planet, founder and first President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (1991-93) in London.Item Open Access Innovations that transform society beyond robotics, genetics and artificial intelligence(Nazarbayev University Official, 2018-02-21) Gunter, PauliA "Must-See" Exclusive Guest Lecture at Nazarbayev University by Entrepreneur and Author of "The Blue Economy" Gunter Pauli! But ebbing globalization, structural changes, macroeconomic issues, the constraints imposed by corruption, pollution, and aging cloud growth prospects. Overseas commitments, military ambitions are a drain. A number of potential flashpoints increase the threat of conflict. Near term threats are from: domestic financial crisis that derails growth process with serious political consequences; a damaging trade war with the US that drags down global economy; disputes with neighbors and their allies that accidentally or otherwise lead to military action. We have nearly 500 faculty members from 59 countries. Quite naturally, everyone arrives in Kazakhstan with a fully formed view of how a university should function. It takes time to come to a consensus position on the most appropriate way to operate within this context. For instance, five years ago, we debated the meaning of simple terms such as “learning outcomes”, because our British, American, European, Australian and Kazakh colleagues all used the term in different ways...
